A Thursday Night Hobby

A Thursday Night Hobby

Last year, I was in search of a hobby, so I signed up for a beginner’s tennis class in my neighborhood. Along with five other women, I go to class for an hour on Thursday evenings, where we meet with a great coach named Nick. I had never played tennis before, but I’ve gotten really into it. At first, I didn’t even know how to hold a racquet, but after a couple months, we can now play not-terrible games. My goal is to challenge my mom to a real match this spring. We will see!

Earth Day Event Held in Brooklyn Tennis Center

A Tennis center in Brooklyn is swinging its focus on helping the planet in honor of Earth Day.

Court 16 in Gowanus celebrated by providing eco-friendly activities Sunday.

Kids got to color and make cardboard bracelets.

Parents were asked to bring their old cell phones so they could be re-recycled.

Of course the event included tennis and everyone attending got to play for free.

Why We Play Tennis

Why We Play Tennis

It's hard to find places to play in the city, but we found Court 16. It's an indoor, kid-friendly tennis court, located in Brooklyn.  My girls were nervous to play at first, however, I asked them to channel inspiration from the world's greatest tennis sisters: Venus and Serena.

Quiet Please: Pharrell Williams and adidas launch tennis initiative for NYC

Pharrell Williams is known for his many fashion collaborations, from G-Star to Billionaire Boys Club to Chanel, but his partnership with adidas, which began in 2014 with a slick line of Stan Smith sneakers and track jackets signaled a deeper collaboration ahead.

We need more love," Pharrell Williams says to me, sitting in a hotel suite in downtown New York City. "We need love, man." And he's right. For many of us, there's never been a time where it was more clear that we need more love in this world. It's from that root need that he launched his latest campaign with Adidas named, in writing at least, Quiet Please. (with the intentional strikethrough). You can call it "Don't Be Quiet Please."
